A Once-in-a-Generation Opportunity to Bring Brixton's Markets into Community Ownership

Our £50 million community-led bid has been selected as the preferred buyer for Brixton Village and Market Row. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring one of London's most historic and culturally significant markets into community ownership, ensuring that the wealth it creates is reinvested in the traders and communities that have sustained it for generations.

On the verge of history: the largest UK asset ever brought into community ownership.

As the preferred buyer of the markets, we are now focused on raising the remainder of the £50 million to secure the markets' future for generations to come. The proposed transaction is conditional on us completing due diligence and exchanging contracts in the next 8 weeks and raising the remaining funds and completing the legal and governance work in up to a further 4 months afterwards.

We are inviting trusts and foundations, social investors and mission-aligned philanthropists to join us in this historic campaign.

The opportunity

This is a rare opportunity for foundations, philanthropists, social investors and the public to make history by backing the £50 million acquisition of Brixton Village and Market Row. If successful, this would be the largest commercial asset ever brought into community ownership in the UK. Community ownership would protect the markets' cultural significance and ensure the value they generate is retained and reinvested locally.

Campaign progress

  • Acquisition value: £50 million
  • £6.5 million already pledged by institutional funders
  • Over £579,000 raised through our public fundraising campaign, as of early September 2026

We are now seeking additional commitments from trusts and foundations, mission-aligned philanthropists, social investors and strategic partners. Every donation counts, and will contribute to us securing the markets.

Governance and accountability

The ownership and governance model is being designed now by the traders, with the community and professional advisers. The principles are settled: real votes for traders and residents, surplus reinvested rather than extracted, and accountability to Brixton. The structure that delivers them will be shared with funders as soon as it is agreed, ahead of publication.

Who's involved

Brixton Traders & Community Association; The Advocacy Academy; the Stour Trust (whose application secured the Asset of Community Value listing); with public backing from the Leader of Lambeth Council and the local MP.
