Where we stand

We are the preferred buyer for Brixton Village and Market Row. We are now moving exclusively to contract with the sellers. The proposed transaction remains conditional, but we believe that we can do this together!

Next: Following an eight-week period to complete due diligence and exchange contracts, we will have a further 4 months to raise the remaining funds and complete the legal and governance work required to complete the purchase. The market continues to trade as normal throughout.

The moment

On the verge of history: the largest UK asset ever brought into community ownership.

Brixton Market has been the beating heart of Brixton for a hundred years. In September 2024, it was put up for sale. Traders, young people and neighbours saw an opportunity for the people who live, work and trade in the market to have control of its future, and decided to bid for it themselves.

Six weeks later, we have done something that has never been done here before. Our community bid was selected as the preferred one.

We are not finished. After completing due diligence & exchanging contracts, we will have up to 4 months to raise the remaining funds and complete the legal and governance work required to complete the purchase. That is what we are asking you to be part of now. The purchase remains conditional and is not yet certain, which is exactly why the next few months matter.

How we got here

The story so far

A century-old market, a sale, and six weeks that changed the ending.

1923–1938

The markets are built

Reliance Arcade, Market Row and Granville Arcade (now Brixton Village) open between the wars. All three are Grade II listed.

2018

Sold in 2018

A joint venture of Angelo Gordon and Hondo Enterprises buys the markets.

Sept 2024

The markets go up for sale

Brixton Village and Market Row are placed on the market.

Early June 2026

First contact

The Advocacy Academy’s property agent makes first contact with the owners.

Monday 15 June 2026

Traders vote to go for it

At an emergency meeting at Brixtonia Lounge on Station Road, the traders vote for the campaign and give it its name: Buy Back Brixton. It is the evening the room can see that this is actually possible.

June 2026

Fifty young people, one day’s notice

The Advocacy Academy mobilised 50 young people at a day’s notice to rally around the campaign alongside the Brixton Traders Community Association.

16–17 June 2026

The campaign goes public

The petition opens with 10 signatures on 16 June. By the next day it has 10,000. By the day after, 20,000.

Friday 19 June 2026

The rally on Brixton Station Road

Over 1,000 people gather on Brixton Station Road for Buy Back Brixton.

22 June 2026

Our bid goes in

Backed by funders and by everything Brixton had raised, we submitted a competitive bid before the deadline.

7 July 2026

Asset of Community Value

Lambeth Council lists Brixton Village and Market Row as an Asset of Community Value, on an application by the Stour Trust.

7 September 2026

We are the preferred buyer

We are the preferred buyer. We now move exclusively to contract with the sellers and are now working to raise the remaining funds and complete the legal and governance work required to complete the purchase. The proposed transaction remains conditional, and the market continues to operate as normal in the meantime.
